Profile

Instrument:
Saxophone (primarily alto, but not exclusively), bassoon, my voice, bass clarinet, piano
School:
High School
Name of School (or last school attended):
Glenbrook North High School
Age
15
I play in a:
Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Small Ensemble, By Myself
About Me:
I'm devoted to pretty much anything worthwhile- music, creating art, exploring science, making life meaningful while I'm in it, &c. &c. I love being aliiiive. I love sharing ideas with people who care. Theatre is one of my favorite things. It's one of those surreal ways anybody can explore what it means to be human from every aspect. I love seeing and performing in shows. I love love. I also enjoy studying Chinese. My favorite cuisine is Mexican. My favorite color is yellow. I have bangs. And I really like French saxophone music. I love water, guacamole, the 1800's, Buddhism, knitting, summertime, impressionist painters, etc etc
Favorite Music:
To play: Out of the classical saxophone repertoire, mostly the French guys' stuff. My favorite pieces are currently the Dubois Concerto and Elliot Carter's Pastoral. Not really a fan of that whole "jazz" thing. But I do enjoy listening to it.
To hear: I absolutely adore Stephen Sondheim. You can hear a truly exceptional brain at work when you listen to his music. Love to sing it, love to study it. Love to play it too. Love him. Can't get enough of him. I am in awe of Beethoven, Mahler, Copland, Bernstein, Villa-Lobos, Mozart, Chopin, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Bernstein, Carter, Gershwin, the list goes on. I love classical music, and neo-classical music, romantic era stuff is gorgeous, musicals (but I'm very picky- Sondheim spoiled me against most other musical theatre composers), Ella Fitzgerald, classic rock, all those huge, orchestral indie bands that seem to pop up nowadays. They've got some good stuff going. Oh, and of course, Patti LuPone is my favorite. What an instrument!

Playing Hindemith

I'm currently working on the Hindemith Konzertstuck for two alto saxophones with my teacher. It's incredible. What I like about it is that it's deceptive- Hindemith has created a lot of meaning in the music he wrote, but to get to it you can't just play the notes, like so many performers tend to do with music they don't really "get." On the surface, it looks like what makes it a fascinating piece is the weird harmonies and precise rhythms, something that turns people off because they don't like… Continue
