On this program we heard 14 year old flutist Christine Murphy perform an incredibly difficult movement of the Ibert Concerto for Flute, a Tango by Argentine composer Astor Piazzola, and a more modern work by Chicago composer Robert Muczynski.
On the program, we mentioned the below "American Idol-ish" clip from Europe of another student performing the Ibert Flute Concerto. I was impressed by all of the seemingly constructive criticism that appeared in the comments section of this video. Christine said that it was because he was a flute player, as opposed to a violin player :-) What do you think?
Biography:
Christine Murphy is fourteen years old and in ninth grade in Park Ridge, Illinois.
Christine began her flute studies with Ikuko Armandi and for the past six year has studied with Hideko Amano. She also studied with Walfred Kujala during the summer of 2008 and has participated in several master classes with Mathieu Dufour. Christine has won first place in the Chicago Flute Club senior and junior level competitions and the senior, intermediate and junior divisions of the Society of American Musicians competitions. She won second place in the 2006 and 2007 MTNA national junior woodwinds competition.
She has advanced to the national MTNA competition again this year. In 2007, Christine was the overall winner of the Junior Midwest Young Artists division of the Walgreens National Concerto Competition and also won the Kishwaukee Symphony Concerto Competition. She has soloed, playing Carmen Fantasie, with the MYA Concert Orchestra; the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra and with the Knox-Galesburg Symphony Orchestra. Recently, she soloed playing the Ibert flute concerto with the Oak Park/River Forest Symphony Orchestra.
